A Tailscale exit node on your static IP, without a VPS

GetAStatic runs a Tailscale exit node in your tailnet for $5/mo per IP address, on top of a plan from $2/mo. Select it on any Tailscale device, and that device reaches the internet from your static IP. You run no VPS and install no WireGuard app.

GetAStatic is not affiliated with Tailscale. Tailscale steps from Tailscale's own docs, checked 2026-10-27.

The problem

A Tailscale exit node needs a machine you run

Tailscale can send all internet traffic from a device through another machine in your tailnet, called an exit node. Websites then see the public IP of the exit node, not the IP of the network you are on.

Tailscale does not supply that machine. A home computer gives you your home IP, which can change, and the exit node stops when the computer sleeps. A VPS gives you a fixed IP, but you rent it, install Tailscale on it, patch it and keep it online.

Your own static IP over WireGuard. No VPS.

Why use GetAStatic?

What the exit node is for

  • One fixed outbound IP for every device in your tailnet, with no server to rent or patch
  • Sign in to allowlisted work systems from a laptop or phone with the same IP every time
  • Keep one US IP for bank, email and account logins while you travel
  • A static IP on iOS and Android with only the Tailscale app, so you do not switch VPN apps
  • Turn the static IP on and off per device from the Tailscale exit node menu
How it works

We run the exit node; your static IP is its address

The add-on puts one machine in your tailnet for you. It runs in an isolated container on our host and joins your tailnet with an auth key that you create. It appears with a name made from your IP, for example getastatic-203-0-113-10.

The machine sends exit traffic through its own WireGuard device on your static IP. Every Tailscale device that selects it reaches the internet from that IP, and the traffic counts against that IP's plan. Your devices keep the standard Tailscale app and nothing else.

Setup

Set up the exit node

You need admin rights on your tailnet for the approval step.

  1. Choose a plan. Your static IP shows in the dashboard.
  2. Create an auth key. In the Tailscale admin console, open the Keys page and generate an auth key. It starts with tskey-.
  3. Add the exit node. In the dashboard, open the Devices tab, then Settings. In the Tailscale exit node row, select Add, paste the key and confirm. We use the key once to join your tailnet and do not store it.
  4. Wait for setup. The row shows Setting up… for a few minutes. Then a new machine, such as getastatic-203-0-113-10, appears in your tailnet.
  5. Allow it as an exit node. Until a tailnet admin allows it, the row says to approve the exit node in your Tailscale admin console. On the Machines page, open the menu of the new machine, edit its exit node settings and turn on Use as exit node. To skip this step for later machines, use the policy below and a key with the tag tag:getastatic.
  6. Select it on your devices. When the row shows Ready, open Tailscale on any device, go to Exit node and select the getastatic machine. That device now reaches the internet from your static IP.
"tagOwners": {
  "tag:getastatic": ["autogroup:admin"]
},
"autoApprovers": {
  "exitNode": ["tag:getastatic"]
}

Optional: add these entries to your tailnet policy file first, then generate the auth key with the tag tag:getastatic. Tailscale then allows the exit node without the manual step.

Good to know

Good to know

  • Exit traffic counts against your static IP's plan: the same speed cap and the same data quota.
  • The address is a datacenter IP, not a residential one.
  • Each IP address takes one exit node. For a second exit node, add another IP address.
  • To reach printers and other devices on your local network while the exit node is on, turn on Allow LAN access (Allow local network access on desktop) in the Tailscale app on that device.
  • The first DNS lookup right after you select the exit node can time out once. Try again, and it works.
  • A machine added with an untagged key follows your tailnet's key expiry (180 days by default). Turn off key expiry for the machine in the admin console, or use a tagged key: Tailscale turns key expiry off for tagged machines by default.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

01Do I need to install WireGuard on my devices?

No. Your devices run only the Tailscale app. The WireGuard tunnel to your static IP runs on our side, inside the exit node machine.

02Why must I approve the exit node?

Tailscale requires a tailnet admin to allow every exit node, including ours. Until then, your devices cannot select it. Allow it once on the Machines page, or let an autoApprovers rule allow machines with the tag tag:getastatic.

03Do you store my Tailscale auth key?

No. We use the key once to join the machine to your tailnet, then discard it. If the key is rejected, the dashboard row shows the error and a Retry with a new key link, with no extra charge. Revoking the key later does not remove the machine from your tailnet.

04Which type of auth key should I create?

A one-off or a reusable key works. If you use the autoApprovers rule, add the tag tag:getastatic to the key. Do not use an ephemeral key: Tailscale removes an ephemeral machine 30 to 60 minutes after it goes offline, and we cannot rejoin without a new key.

05What happens when I remove the exit node?

Select Remove in the dashboard row. The machine logs out right away, and the unused part of the current period goes back to your credit balance. It stays in your admin console as expired until you delete it there.
